Frequently asked questions
-
Of course! Just fill in the pick up address box and that is where we will meet you. We will send a text to the given phone number when we arrive. If anything changes, feel free to text your instructor with more than 24 hours notice, and we will do our best to work with you.
-
Of course! Every time you book in a lesson, you will be asked to fill in a “pick up address” box. We keep an eye on this so feel free to use this to direct us to where you would like to start the lesson. Provided it’s not too far away from the starting point, we will also be happy to end the lesson at home.
-
If you see an available time slot on our website that lines up with after the sun has set, then yes we do! Typically we will do night lessons during the winter months, as the sun sets earlier. ***Please note however… you will not receive 3 night hours for a one hour lesson at night. You will receive 1 night hour and 2 day hours.
-
Yes we are. We have our time slots in 90 minute intervals due to most lessons being 60 minutes, and then a 30 minute buffer time to allow our instructors to drive to the next lesson. If you see a time available and you’d like to move it forward or back slightly, please don’t hesitate to ask us if we are able to do your desired time. We cannot guarantee we can accomodate your request, but are more than happy to try and work with you and your schedule too!
-
We understand that things can change. We ask that you text or call your instructor as soon as you can if you can no longer commit to your booked in lesson. If you make contact prior to 24 hours before your lesson, then we will be happy to reschedule your lesson to an agreed time and date in future. If you make contact within 24 hours, then unfortunately we reserve the right to cancel the lesson. We will do our best to work with you, but late notice gives us less chance to fill your time slot with another student. Please read our cancellation/ rescheduling policy on our home page for more information.

We do not allow new students to hire our vehicle for the test. However, if you have had more than 5 lessons with us, and we feel you are ready to take your test, then we can discuss our ‘test day special’ option.

Both Ann and Jackson are qualified to instruct learners in a manual vehicle. However, Barrenjoey Driving School can only provide an automatic instructors vehicle. If you would like to learn manual with us, you must provide your own vehicle. On top of this, your first lesson will be in our instructor vehicle, as our instructors will need to be confident with your general driving skills before moving into your own manual vehicle.
-
We are happy to allow students to use their own vehicle for driving lessons only after we deem the student skilled enough to do so. Our instructor car has a dual-braking system which ensures safety for both instructor and student, so we will typically only allow students who are over 100 hours, and are looking to do their test in their own vehicle. Every student’s first lesson will be in our instructor vehicle.
-
Short answer, no. We are familiar with test routes, but our instruction emphasises safe, defensive driving skills that you will use for life. We do not focus on wrote-learning test routes just so you can pass your test. If you are a safe driver who can minimise risk, make confident decisions and respond effectively to hazards, the test will take care of itself. These are the qualities we teach to our students.
-
Based on our experience, it is most ideal to have 5 consistently-booked lessons in order to guarantee we are able to cover all safe, defensive driving concepts in a range of different environments/ scenarios.
-
Booking weekly lessons allows the instructor to introduce concepts and practice them within the lesson. It is most ideal for the student to then go off within the week and practice these skills with their parent/guardian. In saying this, we understand not everyone can book in weekly and will of course work with however each student is able to commit to lessons.
